djtxt: Collaborative Grooveshark music playlists via SMS, Twitter and email

Fresh from the fragrant and bohemian confines of the New York 2011 Music Hack Day comes djtxt, a surprisingly awesome Web app that lets you collaborate on the perfect Grooveshark party music playlist.

All you have to do is run the djtxt 'client' (which is just a matter of opening Grooveshark and clicking a bookmarklet) on a computer that's attached to some (preferably loud) speakers. Anyone can then SMS, tweet or email to add songs to the playlist. It's surprisingly easy and it works really well! Songs are added within a few seconds of an email or tweet being received by the djtxt robot -- we didn't test SMS, but presumably it's just as fast.

If you want to see it in action, just follow the first two steps on the djtxt website, then follow the instructions on the Grooveshark page. We'll be listening to the demo playlist in the Download Squad bunker, so feel free to entertain us with your choice of funky beats! If you like what you see (hear?), set up your own djtxt party, turn the volume up to 11, and rock on. Incidentally, if there's a song that you don't like, you can even send djtxt a 'skip' message -- but you can only do it once every 20 minutes!

If you're at work and unable to test it out, there's a video demonstration after the break.

Java EE 7 work focusing on the cloud

Work on the next enterprise edition of Java is proceeding at Oracle, with the company eyeing improvements for cloud computing, REST Web services, and other capabilities, an Oracle representative confirmed on Friday. Java EE (Java Platform, Enterprise Edition) 7 is due in 2012. Capabilities for deploying cloud computing applications and infrastructures will be key to the upgrade. "[Version 7] will be the basis for how to make Java EE relevant for the cloud," said Oracle's Ajay Patel, vice president of product management, in a webcast last week.

You don't know tech: InfoWorld news quiz

Maybe 2011 will be the Year of the Tablet after all. Rumors are swirling that Apple will unveil a sequel to its blockbuster iPad next week, while Motorola hopes there's still room for its newly unveiled Android 3.0-based answer. In other news: Windows Phone 7 handsets got handcuffed by a software update gone awry; app makers rebelled against Apple's new subscription rules; Amazon is hoping its video-streaming service is ready for Prime time; and China clamped down on microbloggers to avert a Middle East-style revolt inside the great firewall.

Speed up Internet Explorer 9 with the Add-on Performance Advisor

Did you know that Internet Explorer 9 has add-ons? Like, real, experience-altering extensions? Head on over to the IE Add-ons Gallery and take a gander. Marvel at how the most popular add-on in the U.K. has a mind-blowing 18 ratings.

Truth be told, there isn't a whole lot to choose from, but if you do end up using a few add-ons or toolbars, you may run into the Add-on Performance Advisor. If any add-on takes too long to load, you'll see a notification at the bottom of your window (see above) -- and if you click through, you'll be shown a list of all your add-ons and how long they take to load (see right). It's just a matter of clicking Disable on any add-ons that are bogging down your surfing, and away you go!

From the same window you can also select the threshold for slow add-ons (but the default of 0.2 seconds is fine).

If you just want to see the general performance of your add-ons and toolbars, click Cog > Manage add-ons and every add-on's load time can be seen.

[Admittedly, a better question to ask at the start would've been 'does IE9 have any useful add-ons?' but that was beyond the scope of this post.]

For more IE9 tips, see our tips index, or read our complete IE9 guide.

Battling over the future of TV

When AT&T last week had to renew its contract with Scripps, the owner of popular lifestyle shows such as Rachael Ray and "House Hunters," it made a demand that the media company thought went too far: Exclusive rights to broadcast the content on iPads and other mobile devices.

Chipmakers fight dwindling gains in efficiency

The latest generation of graphics chips have 3 billion transistors and consume about 200 watts of energy. The numbers are impressive -- until you consider that the human brain has the equivalent of a trillion transistors and consumes just 20 watts of energy, or far less than it takes to run a light bulb.

Tablets last on list of U.S. consumers' wishlists, says Gartner

Despite the tablet mania sweeping the consumer electronic industry, a Gartner survey found that tablet computers rank the lowest on Americans' tech wishlists for 2011. Smartphones topped the list of desired devices, especially those with open source operating systems, while laptops and desktops were next in line for consumer spending plans, says the research study....
