The sea of empty seats at Tropicana Field on Monday night, with 12,446 paying to attend and undoubtedly fewer than that actually in the building, was embarrassing. It was disheartening.
It was not, however, a surprise. This is the reality in Tampa Bay, and it's not going to get any better.
Price and Longoria surely know that, just as they probably understood before opening their respective Twitter apps and mouths Monday night that what they were about to say might do more harm than good. Well, maybe Price didn't. Unlike Longoria's premeditated, unprompted, face-of-the-franchise speech to the media, the ace pitcher's Twitter missive had the feel of a burst of frustration -- and he quickly pulled back in surprise (if not conviction) when hit with the inevitable backlash.
