Fran Crippen's Death Being Investigated by USA Swimming

Filed under:

Fran Crippen's death during an open-water race on Saturday will be investigated by USA Swimming, they announced Monday.

FINA, swimming's international governing body, will also likely investigate the circumstances of the death, but USA Swimming's investigation will live independently of that.

"This has nothing to do with any concerns that we have about an investigation of any kind that FINA would take," USA Swimming executive director Chuck Wielgus said. "We just feel that we owe it to the Crippen family and to ourselves to look into this for ourselves as well."

It is believed the temperature of the water was a factor in Crippen's death, as water temperature isn't regulated in open-water races. It is possible the water could have exceeded 85 degrees for that race, and three other swimmers -- U.S.'s Eva Fabian and Christine Jennings, along with an unidentified Brazilian -- were hospitalized for dehydration. Fabian and Jennings were in the water at the same time as Crippen.
