From the first week of June through the first week of August, the Sox went 38-13, erased a 9 1/2-game deficit and briefly took a 1 1/2-game lead over the Twins in the American League Central.
But it's best, too, to remember that Minnesota has won five of the last eight Central titles, even with an ever-changing roster. And the Twins are about to make it 6-for-9 after completing a three-game sweep of the Sox in Chicago Thursday with an 8-5 victory that pushes Minnesota's lead to nine games and lowers its magic number to eight.
The difference? The Sox had a great one-third of a season. The Twins are having a great season, period. They've done it without closer Joe Nathan and with only half a season's worth of former MVP first baseman Justin Morneau.
They've adjusted and compensated and are 42-16 since the All-Star break. And they are going to be the AL Central champs.
